Seroquel [Quetiapine Fumarate] is an antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Major Depression, as well as Anxiety-related Disorders.
Quetiapine (Seroquel) belongs to a chemical group of drugs, the dibenzothiazepine derivatives. It works like other antipsychotics by blocking dopamine type 2 and serotonin type 2 receptors for neurotransmitters, thereby altering the balance of these chemicals that play a role in thought and behavior.
Generic Seroquel is used in the treatment and management of Schizophrenia, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder [Bipolar Disorder I and Manic Depressive Disorder], besides Anxiety Disorders [Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder], and Insomnia.
In Bipolar Disorder, generic seroquel medicine is prescribed for adults and children above 10; while in the treatment of Schizophrenia, it is given to children who are above 13, besides adults. The Seroquel XR [extended-release Quetiapine] medicine is only given to adults.
